Men of War

I saw the 1c company box set of 41 items for $100 doesn't have the loads of crummy dlc bits and pieces that other publishers have which makes the bulk buying less of a bargain so I thought i'd give it a go.The Men of war series is one which features prominently so here's my review of the first one.

This WWII game has a few different campaigns to choose from including a German and American one. I went for the Russian one because I like the idea of being the underdog.  It tells the story of two young friends who were enlisted, as were almost all young, able bodied males in the country. The first mission gets you used to controlling a few infantry and then a single tank. Unlike in many rts games you have to pay attention to issues such as ammo and even fuel. You also can't be gung- ho as a single anti- tank grenade can end the missions for you.

The second mission changes things up again as you have to hold out against a german onslaught until the workers have loaded the towns machinery on the train. You have to make good use of anti- personnel mines and decide where to place/move your 3 tanks and pieces of artillery. Despite having over a hundred units spread throughout the map the fact that the a.i does a decent job for you while you away means you can focus on one area without worrying things will go to hell for you elsewhere.

The next mission sees you controlling one of the main characters, who was captured as the train from the previous mission was leaving. Rebels have just attacked the germans in the town he was taken to and now you need to help them and get info from the german's base, back to the frontline.

With less men you have to focus on the use of cover is also important as standing out in the open is another quick way to end up dead- although at times sacrificing one unit to distract a tank so you can get another unit to flank it to take it out is rewarding.

At the moment i'm enjoying the variety of missions and seeming realism of the game- ok other than being able to use bandages to restore units to full health. I look forward to seeing more of the game and its sequels.

Rating 6/10
Value- price of $15 for the single game is probably too much, not sure yet, will get back to you when i've seen more of the game.
$40- part of the 7 game 1c war games package- will let you know once i've played the others.
