Steam Deals Feb 14-20

This is the start of a weekly series where I look at games that are at last -50%. There aren't a huge number of big names this week but I'll look at eight games that may be of some interest if you like the genre and don't already have them. There's a mix of fairly new games and ones that are regularly discounted.

                                                           Real Time Strategy

The first game on my list is Offworld Trading Corporation. This RTS, which focuses on exploiting minerals, building technology and beating your economic competition, is 75% off at R139 ($14) and has a metacritic rating of 78. Some have complained that it doesn't have huge replayability as you can use the same strategy over and over but this is less of an issue at the lower price. You may however decide to wait until the gold edition is cheaper to enjoy the expansion and extra map packs.

Infested Planet went more under the radar but is really fun. Each mission you have a group of marines and are defending against a swarm of aliens using weapons, turrets and anything else at your disposal. Between missions you get access to upgrades in terms of access to new units and other boosts such as extra ammo, power and helicopter strikes. It has a metacritic rating of 75% and is an absolute steal at R52 ($4).

The final RTS in my list is one I didn't enjoy as much but is even cheaper so you may want to consider it. Battlevoid: Harbinger describes itself as a "hard sci-fi space exploration game blending roguelike, turn-based, star mapstrategy and real-time space battles." I was hoping it was like FTL but with a fleet but it didn't live up to that dream. A game that I think did it better was Distant Star: Revenent fleet but that's a story for another day. Battlevoid: Harbinger has only 1 review at metacritic (was given 75%) but it has a 77% positive user rating on steam and is only R22 ($2).

                                                                 Turn Based Strategy

Fallen Enchantress: Legendary edition is a fun Fantasy TBS. You develop your cities, attract heroes and put them into parties with your units to go out and lay waste to neutral creatures and your enemies. It didn't have the same critical appeal as Endless Legend which pushed the genre forward more with races which played so differently and a series of quests for each but I played it for over 100 hours so it must have done something right. It has a metacritic rating of 80 and it's currently on special for R67 ($6).

Moving onto a space TBS. Galactic Civilisations 2 is a game that everyone should already own. If you don't buy it now even if you didn't enjoy the sequel. The base game is solid but the expansions added an excellent story as opposed to just skirmish maps which saw them [ Dark Avatar and Twilight of the Arnor] get over 90% on metacritic. The complete edition is R65 ($6) and should keep you entertained for dozens of hours.

Age of fear is a game that I actually haven't played yet. It looks like an interesting board game/miniatures type tactics game and is R47 ($3) so I bought it. It was released in 2011 and has an 8.2 user rating on metacritic which is better than it's 2015 sequel.

                                                                  RPG

This is another game that I don't think is great but if you are a fan of the genre and don't have much to play at the moment you might consider buying it. Two Worlds 2 is an action focussed RPG which was released in 2011. It has a metacritic rating of 76% and is only R24 ($2)

                                                                      Action

The Transformer games seem to be on special very often. This week is no exception. War for Cyberton, released in 2010, is the cheaper at R75 ($5). Fall of Cybertron, released in 2012, is R150 ($10). Both have decent metacritics ratings of 75 and 78 respectively.
