Virtua Tennis 4

I haven't played any sports games as part of this series- mainly because there's no real "finishing" them. You would have to set your on target for what is considered completing PES or Football manager or a NBA or MLB game. But Virtua Tennis has a 1 season world tour mode so that makes life easier.

In it you move around a board game like map, using movement tickets to choose where to stop. There are training minigames, practice matches, various levels of tournaments as well as other events to boost your fame (which is basically your score you are trying to maximise. These all use up your energy so every once in a while you need to stop at hotels

Training sessions give you points towards specific styles you can unlock and also improve your maximum condition which is important so you can play more matches and do more events without resting. They also give you some money to buy additional movement tickets, recovery tickets, agents which boost your fame gain and cosmetic items (racquets, outfits etc.)

The main part of the tour is of course the tournaments. Most have 4 entrants and your opponents are fictional. The majors have 8 with most being real players such as Federer, Del Potro and Seppi. The fictional characters are very easy to beat on normal level but the real ones are quite difficult especially if you haven't unlocked the good player styles yet. I enjoy the matchplay- it's a good mix between arcade and simulation. You benefit from good positioning and timing but you can hit the odd outrageous shot and you get a bar which when filled up allows you to hit a supershot. It's not an autowin button- you still have to chose a good time to use it as hitting the ball very hard but close to the opponent does not help much. I found both the hard hitting baseline and netplay styles enjoyable although not sure why anyone would choose the more defensive options such as super speed.

Most tournaments are singles but there are some doubles tournaments. As you progress through the season you have the opportunity to impress real players in training and then choose them as your partner.

All in all it is a fun game although I don't particularly like the fame system deciding your ranking as opposed to just tournament performances. Also matches are only 1 set first to 2 games which is very short. I think they could have at least made the majors a bit longer. If you think this will bother you then Virtua Tennis 99 may be the better choice for you.
