A-Z backlog challenge 2017- Alpha Protocol

Like last year when I started with Alien vs Predator I've gone with another FPS to kick things off. Alpha Protocol sees you play a spy for a shadowy government agency. You are sent to look into links between arms companies and terrorist organisations. I'm sure it will surprise no one to find you will be betrayed and end up fighting for your life against that very agency.

Taking inspiration from Deus Ex, Alpha protocol has some RPG elements and as you gain xp you can gain levels in various weapons skills such as shotguns and rifles as well as engineering and hacking.
You will also be able to improve your weapons as you make money during missions.

The graphics are not too bad but the levels are not very well designed. The outdoor locations are particularly linear and the enemy ai is not very smart. The only real challenge is the poor controls with the camera moving erratically from time to time.

The minigames for hacking computer systems, turning off alarms and lockpicking are way too easy and not very fun either. The lockpicking is perhaps the worst implementation of this kind of thing in any game I've ever played.

The game does have some redeeming features. Despite the story being really cliche, the dialogue is well written and the voice acting for the most part is very good too. Although the skill system is pretty boring, the perk system is better. You get various bonuses based on your choices and achievements in game.

It's also cool that your choices have a big effect on the game. It doesn't just effect perks and dialogue but those enemies you allow to live may later give you info or other help. If you are interested in a story-driven FPS, this may be a game worth checking out.
