A-Z Backlog challenge: Kingdom Rush

Kingdom Rush is a fun tower defense game from Ironhide Game Studio. The story is standard fantasy fare with you protecting the kingdom from bandits, monsters and finally defeating the big, bad demon.

In the early part of the game, you have four different types of towers. Barracks send three soldiers to block an area. Archers and mages shoot passing enemies while cannon towers do the same but as an AoE. You also have two spells- one an aoe fire spell and the other places weak farmers to do a similar job to the barracks. The graphics are crisp and it's very easy to differentiate all the types of towers, units and enemies.

Between missions you gain stars which allow you to give bonuses to your towers and spells- such as make upgrades cheaper or spells last longer.

As you work through the campaign towers also become more powerful and open up specialisations.
For example, barracks can be upgraded to either produce paladins or barbarians. You also can buy specific skills for these units inside the tower- such as healing spells or aoe attacks. There's a fun variety and it's for the most part well-balanced.

Most of the missions are challenging and each upgrade feels vital to improving your chances. As I got near the end of the campaign, I needed to get more stars from earlier missions to improve my spells to deal with the increasing hordes of more powerful enemies.

Another good thing about the game is the heroes that you get. Having direct control over a unit gives you something extra to do rather than just wait to get more money for more towers. Again you can choose between melee fighters, ranged heroes and mages.

I think this is a game that will not only appeal to fans of tower defense games but could bring new people into the genre. My only criticisms are that the story is pretty bland and that while it does all that you would expect in an impressively competent way, it doesn't try anything new or bringing anything exciting to the genre in the way a game such as Defender's quest does with individual characters who level up and use different weapons and equipment.
