A-Z Backlog challenge: Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2- Chaos rising

With Dawn of War 3 coming out soon, it seemed like a good time to get this one off the backlog. I'd played through the original Dawn of War 2 campaign at least twice but previously gave up on this one pretty quickly.

It plays very similarly to the main game. In that, you were protecting a sector from the Tyranid threat, here you travel to a sector where a planet has reappeared after being lost for 1000 years in the void. You move between planets in the area and choose main and side missions to gain loot, levels and progress the storyline which this time focuses on defeating a Chaos demon and those corrupted by it.

You can carry over your leader from the main campaign. This time you start with the Devastator in your squad and you also get a librarian early on, so there is more variety in terms of unites to choose from. You still go into battle with 4 squads and will see familiar enemies such as Eldar and Orks who you fight in some missions as well as Imperial guardsmen. I found fighting the Tyrannids more fun than Chaos and the plot this time is a lot more convoluted with a hidden traitor in your midst as well as planetary governors who turn against you.

At the end of each mission the same screens show up. The first shows how successful you were in terms of speed, % of enemy killed and number of squads you had to revive. The second shows your units levelling and what loot you picked up. In the main game, very successful missions allowed you extra deployments per day, allowing you to capture more useful areas containing buildings which gave you bonuses on future missions. In this you are limited to one mission per day so it's not very important to either be very careful or fast.

As you level up, you choose where to spend your skill points. You have health, melee damage, energy and ranged damage and their are various skills, both passive and active to unlock.

There are also a lot of weapons, armor and items to find. Melee weapons include claws, axes and lances. Ranged weapons include blasters, flamers, sniper rifles and rocket launches. Not all squads can use all weapons and some need to be unlocked through skills. Items include med kits, shields, rocket barrages, many different types of grenades and explosives as well as items which give various buffs for a certain amount of time. You have limited slots to carry them in to battle so it's a tough decision which to take each mission depending on what you expect to face. It's cool that you can see the different weapons clearly on your units in battle and that they make such a big impact on your success depending on if you choose the correct one for the job at hand.

Although a preferred the main campaign, which I highly recommend, this is a pretty fun expansion so if there's not much difference in price it's worth picking up the bundle.
