A-Z Backlog challenge: Guild of dungeoneering

Image
From reviewing the game I enjoyed the least to perhaps the game I enjoyed the most. Unsurprisingly, in this game you are running a guild of dungeoneers. So what does this entail? Well you have a guild which you upgrade when you have enough money. To get money you send dungeoneers off to do quests. Most of your time will be spent in these dungeons. Here you will come across the most interesting mechanics of the game. In the dungeon you have two decks of cards. The first are the dungeon cards. These are default to the quest you are doing. Here you will place tiles for your dungeoneer to move along, monsters for them to fight and treasure to entice them to go in the direction you want.   The second set of cards represents the skills of your dungeoneer. These allow you to do a melee attack, magic attack, heal and block. Some cards have multiple effects and some have slight variations such as attacks which are unblockable or quick attacks which can be useful in finishing of...

A-Z backog challenge: Faery

Image
Going to cut to the chase. This is probably the worst game I have finished as part of the backlog challenge over the last 2 years. I would have given up on it if I had others starting with F that weren't so long (looking at you final fantasies). In this game you are tasked with finding out what is causing the magic to die in the faery world. You travel to 3 different worlds (excluding the starting location) and do various quests to find out what is wrong in each. The locations are varied and don't look too bad. You have a desert city on and under a giant crab, a ghost ship and a giant tree.   The writing is decent and you can check back on quests and the different characters you have met in a useful journal. Unfortunately the quests are extremely monotonous. Many are either extremely boring and occasionally frustrating fetch quests with a lot of backtracking. The map in the game is poor so at times it is difficult to find where you need to go. The res...

A-Z backlog challenge: Endless Legend

Image
When I didn't have so much free time, I played this a a couple of hours a day for a few days and then got distracted with other things. Then when I got back to it I didn't remember how most things worked so would restart. Now I finally played a game to completion. It's a fantasy 4x game from the makers of Endless Space which was of course instead sci-fi based. There are a number of different factions to choose from who all have different units, abilities, playstyles and a questline to move along (and win from if you make it all the way to the end of it). You start off with one settler, one hero and a few units. You can only build one city in each region so you must decide which you want to focus on as some areas will have more industry while others have more science or dust (gold). As the city grows you can choose new hexes to exploit and how many population to focus onn each area- food, industry, science, dust and culture.  Each region also has minor faction...

A-Z backlog challenge: Dead Age

Image
Dead age is one of quite a few zombie games released in the last few years which sees you gathering a group, improving a base/town and improving your teams equipment as you face greater challenges and attempt to survive or escape to safety. There are various locations to explore. Each one has 20 zones with progressively harder enemies. There are a decent variety here, including zombies, wild animals, other unfriendly groups of survivors (referred to as punks) as well as soldiers. Fights are fought out in turn based fashion much like in Final Fantasy 7 (as the developers mention in the steam page). You can attack with either melee or ranged weapon, use one of your combat skills or use an item from your inventory. After each battle you get semi-random loot such as armor, ammo, food or medical supplies or a random event where you can choose how to act to potentially get rewards as well. Many of these have a chance to succeed based on which skills you have upgraded on your...

A-Z Backlog challenge: Call of Duty: World at War

Image
As with the other AAA games where you can find 1000s of reviews online about I'm going to keep this one short and just give a few thoughts on this one. Call of Duty: World of War is an impressive technical accomplishment. Dozens of men and vehicles will act pretty intelligently and you really feel part of the action. The graphics are also very good- seeing a head and limbs being blown off from close range is very impressive. There are also a number of different guns to use. But is it any fun?   I would say yes and no. There are two stories being followed. I found the American missions through the islands of Asia pretty boring. The fighting through the ruined streets and buildings of Europe was better. The best ones were those that switched things up a bit. In one Russian mission you need to focus entirely on sniping. In another you are controlling a tank. There was only one American mission which was a bit different- in it you control turrets on a plane trying to rescue sol...

A-Z Backlog challenge: Banner Saga

Image
Banner Saga combines a choose your own adventure style visual novel with tactical battles. The story has a Viking legend setting and the story alternates between you controlling two caravans containing various heroes as well as a number of Varl, fighters and other men. One of the caravans sees Varl (Giant humanoids) accompanying the human prince to the Varl capital to make an alliance against the monstrous dredge who are moving south to threaten all as they had done in the past. You are introduced to a lot of characters very quickly and I feel this takes a bit away from building a connection with them. The second caravan is a more personal story. Here we meet a hunter, Rook and his daughter who find dredge close to and later attacking their home town. They lead survivors across the continent in search of a safe place to resettle. While travelling various semi-random events will occur and you will have to choose how to respond to them. Some will lead to possible losses or the gai...

A-Z backlog challenge 2017- Alpha Protocol

Image
Like last year when I started with Alien vs Predator I've gone with another FPS to kick things off. Alpha Protocol sees you play a spy for a shadowy government agency. You are sent to look into links between arms companies and terrorist organisations. I'm sure it will surprise no one to find you will be betrayed and end up fighting for your life against that very agency. Taking inspiration from Deus Ex, Alpha protocol has some RPG elements and as you gain xp you can gain levels in various weapons skills such as shotguns and rifles as well as engineering and hacking. You will also be able to improve your weapons as you make money during missions. The graphics are not too bad but the levels are not very well designed. The outdoor locations are particularly linear and the enemy ai is not very smart. The only real challenge is the poor controls with the camera moving erratically from time to time. The minigames for hacking computer systems, turning off alarms an...
